I heard/read that Grant Balfour has signed a $2.05 million deal with the Rays.

I would guess that he will get 2 yrs and $8 million if he rejects arbitration.

If he accepts, he'll prob get $5 mil

Anyone heard anything about Grant?

It would look like he can expect/deserves a 2-3 year deal worth 4-5 mil a year if the current relief market continues.

I've only seen snippets on the rumour mill. As a Type A player any signing club has to fork over their 1st round draft pick. Clubs may be waiting to see what is happening first..

A few clubs have been mentioned as looking at him though..

I was a little shocked the Yanks were thrown in the mix, they won't part with their first round pick for R. Soriano, so I doubt they'd throw that away for Balfour.

I'd love to see him head to Washington or the Twins, or stay with the Rays. All the other teams on the list are a while away from winning.

Am sure Nationals management would be pleased someone thinks they will be contending this year.

The Nats will only have to give up a third-rounder to get Balfour, but that's because they've signed a couple of other players and have already forfeited picks in rounds one and two already.

I'd tip them to finish 3rd behind the Phils and Braves on paper, and if either of those teams has a front line starter go down (Halladay, Lee, Hudson) they might even finish second. They might even make some noise even if those two staffs stay healthy, as both offenses have some question marks about them.

  • Teams believe Grant Balfour's asking price is dropping, according to Olney (Twitter link).

IMO he will stay with the Rays - I think the first snippit is on the Money. Type A status is a big stumbling block for most teams.

Not a bad move. Pitching in a good pitchers park for 2 years with a good salary. From the article, the A's wont offer him arbitration, so if he pitches well for 2 years, the next club to sign him wont have to surrender a draft pick to sign him.

Probably a good move, and maybe he is looking 2 years down the track to a bit of a raise?

Grant has now "officially" been named as closer for the A's.
